Jimmy Sullivan Obituary Stafford, BNE Death: Queensland MP Found Dead at 44

Queensland independent MP Jimmy Sullivan has tragically passed away in Brisbane. Police were called to a residence in the Stafford suburb of north Brisbane last night, where they discovered the body of a man. Authorities have stated that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Sullivan, 44, was elected to the Queensland Parliament in 2020 as the member for Stafford and was re-elected in 2024. His sudden passing will trigger a by-election for the seat.

Mr. Sullivan was expelled from the Labor Party Caucus last year and had been serving as an independent, sitting on the crossbench. His tenure was marked by personal scrutiny, including a domestic incident allegation raised in parliament by the government.

Premier David Crisafulli expressed his condolences, stating that Queenslanders would be “shocked” by Mr. Sullivan’s death. “On behalf of all Queenslanders, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time,” he said in a statement. Opposition Leader Steven Miles also shared his sympathies: “Our thoughts are with Jimmy’s family, friends, and community this morning as we all process this news.”

Kim Richards, former Labor MP for Redlands, expressed deep sadness at the loss, as did Queensland Labor, who described Mr. Sullivan as a “dear friend” to many. A statement from the party read: “Jimmy was a dear friend of so many people across Queensland and the labor movement, and his loss will be felt deeply by many. We honor his memory and his deep connection to his local community, where he was born, raised, and honored to serve his whole life.”
