Tragic Crash Claims Four Lives in Chambers County, Including Liberty High School Student
A devastating car crash on the evening of April 10, 2026, in Chambers County has claimed the lives of four people, including Liberty High School student Jay’Shawn Godfrey and two juveniles, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on FM 563, just south of Interstate 10. A 2005 Chrysler 300 sedan, driven by 37-year-old Kara Beagle of Liberty, left the roadway and struck a tree, killing all four occupants inside the vehicle. Along with Beagle, the passengers included 19-year-old Jay’Shawn Godfrey of Houston, and two other juveniles, ages 17 and 15, whose names have not yet been released.
Texas DPS Sgt. Sammy Lattner indicated that preliminary findings suggest speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash. An autopsy has been ordered for Beagle, and the investigation is ongoing as authorities work to understand the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
The crash has sent shockwaves through the Liberty community, especially within Liberty Independent School District. Superintendent Dusty McGee confirmed that Jay’Shawn Godfrey, a student at Liberty High School, was among the victims. In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook, McGee expressed the district’s grief and urged the community to support the grieving families while respecting their privacy during this difficult time.
“This tragedy has deeply affected many of the families, friends, classmates, and teachers,” McGee said. “Counseling services will be available on campus beginning Monday, with additional support from the ministerial alliance. We will continue to provide grief resources to assist our students and families.”
