Deputy Randy Hoppert Obituary Shooting Tulare Death: A Fallen Hero, Forever Remembered
Tulare County is mourning the loss of Deputy Randy Hoppert, who was tragically killed in the line of duty Thursday morning. The 42-year-old deputy was fatally shot at approximately 10:20 a.m. on April 9, 2026, while assisting with the service of an eviction notice in Porterville.
Deputy Hoppert, a 14-year veteran of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, was struck by gunfire after deputies arrived at the scene on Newcomb Street and Grand Avenue. The suspect, identified as 60-year-old David Morales, opened fire, initiating a violent exchange. Despite swift efforts from fellow deputies to carry out a tactical rescue, Deputy Hoppert succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to Sierra View Medical Center.
The search for Morales continues, as authorities believe he is barricaded inside the residence, armed with a high-powered rifle. The area remains volatile, with law enforcement working diligently to secure the scene and ensure public safety. Several nearby schools have been placed on lockdown, and residents are urged to remain sheltered.
Deputy Hoppert leaves behind his wife, Ashley, their two sons, Austin and Everett, as well as his mother and sister. Described by colleagues as dedicated, compassionate, and courageous, he will be remembered not only as a committed law enforcement officer but also as a loving husband and father.
Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, who met with the grieving Hoppert family, extended the department’s heartfelt condolences. “This is a heartbreaking loss for our department and our community,” Boudreaux stated. “Deputy Hoppert was a true hero, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
The investigation remains active as authorities continue their efforts to bring the suspect to justice.
