Five Points Denver Shooting: Kaylen Stroter Charged After Witnesses Report Random Targeting of Victim
A fatal shooting in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood has left one person dead and a 22-year-old man facing a first-degree murder charge, following a chaotic series of events that unfolded in broad daylight this week.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Kaylen Stroter, who was taken into custody shortly after the incident on Thursday afternoon. According to police reports, officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of 32nd Street near Curtis Park just before 1 p.m., responding to multiple emergency calls describing a violent altercation in progress.
Witnesses reported hearing a woman screaming and seeing a man armed with a firearm moments before a gunshot rang out. One caller indicated that the suspect appeared to have “shot someone random,” raising early concerns that the victim may not have been directly involved in the initial confrontation.
Upon arrival, officers used surveillance technology to locate Stroter near nearby basketball courts, where he was detained without incident. A handgun was later recovered in the vicinity. Meanwhile, responding officers discovered the victim lying on a residential lawn with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene, and their identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Investigators say video footage and witness statements reveal a disturbing sequence leading up to the shooting. The suspect was allegedly involved in a physical assault on a woman when a neighbor intervened. A struggle followed, during which a firearm was dropped and briefly recovered by the neighbor. The woman managed to flee the scene in a vehicle.
Authorities allege that Stroter then retrieved another weapon and fired toward the departing vehicle before reemerging outside after briefly entering a nearby building. The fatal shooting is believed to have occurred shortly thereafter.
