Roberto C. Garcia-Chavez and Trent Badillo Killed in Portland River Crash; One Still Missing
Authorities have identified two victims who died when a car plunged into the Willamette River early Monday morning, while a fourth occupant remains missing and is presumed dead.
The Multnomah County Medical Examiner confirmed the deceased as 19-year-old Roberto C. Garcia-Chavez and 17-year-old Trent Badillo, both from Beavercreek in Clackamas County. Families have been notified. A third occupant, a 17-year-old boy, survived the crash with non-life-threatening injuries after being rescued from the river. The fourth occupant, believed to be a 20-year-old man, has not yet been located, and authorities presume he is deceased; his identity has not been released.
Investigators believe Garcia-Chavez was driving a white 1996 Toyota Corolla at the time of the incident. Shortly after 2 a.m., a Portland police officer observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way and running red lights in downtown Portland. When the officer attempted to stop the car, it accelerated east on Southwest Harvey Milk Street. The officer did not pursue but witnessed the vehicle cross Southwest Naito Parkway, enter Waterfront Park, and plunge into the Willamette River.
First responders rescued the surviving 17-year-old, while Multnomah County Sheriff divers recovered the bodies of Garcia-Chavez and Badillo from approximately 35 feet of water under zero-visibility conditions later that morning. Authorities plan to remove the submerged vehicle, though the timeline depends on hiring a contractor with specialized equipment.
Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and are urging anyone with information related to the crash to contact the Portland Police Department.
The tragic incident has left families and the Portland community shaken, underscoring the severe risks associated with high-speed and reckless driving. Authorities continue to work diligently to locate the missing occupant and determine all circumstances surrounding the crash.
