Zakai Johnson Obituary, Toombs County, GA Accident Death: Gone Too Soon

 TOOMBS COUNTY, GA — A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, when 2-year-old Zakai Johnson lost his life after being struck by a vehicle outside his home on Cadillac Drive in Toombs County.

According to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 5:55 p.m. when a silver GMC Yukon, driven by Edward Wright, struck Zakai while he was playing in the yard. The child’s mother, Shanora Johnson, rushed her son to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital, hoping for a miracle, but despite all efforts to save him, Zakai was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Vidalia Police Department initially responded to the hospital, but it was later determined that the accident took place outside the city limits at 2704 Cadillac Drive, prompting the case to be handed over to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

As part of the investigation, the Georgia State Patrol and its Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) have been called in to assist. While early findings suggest the incident may have been accidental, officials have stated that the investigation remains active as they work to fully understand the sequence of events.

The Toombs County community is now grieving the heartbreaking loss of a young child, whose life was tragically cut short. Family, friends, and loved ones are left mourning the loss of Zakai, and their thoughts and prayers remain with his mother and family during this incredibly difficult time.
